Is it possible to determine the mfg date of a driver?
I just took possesion of a pair of 291-16A drivers
on the face is printed 391421 then a serial number 1866 and in a split box AL on top 53 on bottom.
Also, these measure 8 ohms, so I suspect the diaphragm has been replaced.
they look like gray aluminum. Are there any pictorial examples of different diaphragms?

391 is Altec 4 is last digit of year, I vote for 1974

Original 291 frams have a brown ring around the dome. The domes are all aluminum except for 290 and 292.
If the surround is brown Symbiotik, if surround is a kinda waffled aluminum it's a 288 aluminum or 299 Pascalite. The original 291 fram (brown ring= Symbiotik) is no longer made, although a Radian replacement is similar.

There is also no difference in appearance between a 8 or 16 ohm all aluminum diaphragm.So if you have an all Alum. diaphragm the only way to tell the difference is in the voice coil which will measure close to 8 or close to 16 ohms.No difference in appearance especially looking at it from the top(dome).
